Soler
Born in Pinar del Rio Cuba,
Soler pitched for the Leones del Escogido in the
Dominican Winter Baseball League in 2004 and in
September 2004, Soler signed a 3 year, $2.8 million
contract with the New York Mets. Initially unable to
obtain a visa to enter the United States until November
2005 he began his career as a Met with the Single-A
St.Lucie Mets in April 2006, moving quickly to the
Double-A Binghamton Mets in May 2006. Soler made his MLB
debut as a starter at Shea Stadium on May 24, 2006. He
gave up 2 earned runs, 5 hits, 4 walks in 6 innings with
a no decision as the Mets defeated the Philadelhia
Phillies 5-4. In Soler's fourth career start on June 10,
2006, he hurled his first complete game shutout, a
two-hitter, against the Arizona Diamondbacks and their
ace pitcher Brandon Webb.
Most recently, Alay played
the 2009 season for the Newark Bears under the tutelage
of future Hall of Famer, Tim Raines.
